It was an ordinary day in New York City. The weather was sunny and calm People of all walks of life were busy in their own activities. Businessmen strode with confidence, holding their suitcases, on their way to another hard day of work. The sounds of impatient drivers sounding their horns in a bid to hasten traffic. Tourists were all over one of the most famous landmarks in the world, the magnificent Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre. Each and everyone was busy with themselves, never did they know that this day would be remembered forever as it sparked off a series of important events, war.
“Boom!” a deafening noise muffled out other sounds in the city. Everyone looked up to see a ball of fire penetrating the side of the building. One part of the building erupted in flames and looked precarious, as it seemed that it was going to topple anytime. Everyone screamed and ran in terror in all directions. There was total chaos everywhere. People in their houses rushed to their window to have a close inspection of what happened, the sight of the Twin Towers enveloped in flames shattered their hearts. Some lucky people caught a glimpse of what happened, a plane had hurtled into the building at a high speed. An accident? No it was an act of terrorism.
When everyone thought that the worse was over, yet another plane dived into the heart of the World Trade Centre. In a few minutes, the tragedy bound to happen happened. The world trade centre collapsed. What was once a famous landmark visited by many thousands of tourists yearly was reduced into shattered concrete and mangled bodies.
Within minutes, wailing sirens of rescue teams filled the city. The lingering smell of death filled the streets. All the help was needed, even passer-bys stopped by to help, some were still in shock. It was not sufficient; it would require many days and manpower to salvage the wreckage. Many people were trapped in the debris. Were they dead or alive? Nobody knew. God was only one they could turn to. They had to wait many days before rescue workers could reach them. Many Americans came together to pray. To pray for the people trapped, their families and loved ones. Many were busy calling their loved ones to check whether they were safe.
A wound would be left in the hearts of the people of America, not a normal wound, but a wound which would leave a deep scar forever. Would they be in hatred? Sorrow? It did not matter as the deaths of the thousands of people trapped in the debris would not be justified. This was such a tragedy as many lives were lost. Families lost their loved ones. Would this event spark a World War three? We would never know for now. All we can do is pray for peace.

Nothing unusual at all. Until…

Passers-by screamed in terror as the aircraft erupted into a magnificent ball of fire. Flames licked the side of the building hungrily, covering the area in a layer of jet-black soot. Then, before anybody could react, yet another plane dived straight into the heart of the World Trade Centre. Like a deck of cards, the building collapsed floor by floor. In a matter of minutes, one of the most famous landmarks of the United States of America had been reduced into a pile of shattered concrete and mangled bodies. An enormous cloud of dust loomed over the city ominously. Chaos reigned.

Wailing sirens signalled the arrival of the rescue teams. Even as they rummaged through the mountains of rubble, more people were volunteering to help out. Everybody was eager to do their part to sooth the pain; to ease it. The stench of death lingered in the dusty streets. Lives had been wasted, families had been torn apart, hopes and dreams had been dashed. The cruelty of the ruthless terrorist act stung.

Some wounds can never be healed fully, and even if they are, there will always be a scar. Painless, but there nonetheless, something that will never be forgotten. The effects would be felt forever. Loved ones that are gone can never be brought back. The people of America would never really feel safe anymore. What could be the reason for this senseless act? Hate? Jealousy? Anger? Whatever the reason is, it certainly does not justify the needless killings of thousands of innocent people.

I cannot help but pity the families of all those affected by the terrorist act that took place on that fateful afternoon on September 11th, 2001. Imagine your brother, sister, mother or father going off to work, and never returning. To me, family is of utmost importance. The loss of a family member would leave a void in my heart, and I’m sure all of you feel the same way. In a way, this event united the people of America, and reminded them that was no such thing as total security. Never rest on your laurels. Hopefully, a lesson can be learnt even from a tragic incident such as this.

Operation Iraqi freedom

Over a week has passed since the start of Operation Iraqi freedom, which was triggered by Iraqi president Saddam Hussein’s refusal to leave the country. President George W Bush issued a statement saying that this war against Iraqi president was not only the forced disarmament of Iraq, which constantly denied possessing weapons of mass destruction which was later found to be untrue but also the removal of President of Iraq from power.

The US President’s decision to start the war came as a major shocker to the majority of the world’s population, sparking anti-war protests all over the world. These days we see pictures of rallying protesters holding anti-war banners and marching down streets making their voice heard in front of the American embassies of their respective countries.

As of all wars, the war in Iraq too has been having its toll on both the soldiers of both sides as well as the almost unavoidable civilian casualties. Hundreds of Iraqi soldiers lie dead on the streets and deserts where most of the fighting has taken place. There is no sleep for those in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad as thousands of missiles and bombs and the occasional blaring of the coalition aeroplanes bombard them, causing them to live in the constant fear of where the next bomb might land.

Meanwhile, the pentagon assures the world that its only targets are the political buildings and the President’s residences- leaving the main infrastructure of the country untouched so that it will be able to rebuild itself after the war.

As what was meant to be a war of swift victory drags on we can only pray for the safety of the innocent civilians caught in the line of fire and hope that a good outcome will be reached...
